Retainers are a critical part of your orthodontic treatment. Together, you and your dentist have worked hard to get your teeth as aligned and straight as possible. However, as soon as your braces are removed, teeth have a tendency to return to their original position. Retainers are needed to prevent this from happening and to keep your teeth adjusted to their new position. After a period of several weeks, you will only need to wear your retainer at night. The length of time you need to use a retainer depends on your teeth. If your teeth shifted because you haven’t been wearing your retainer, you may need to use braces again. The orthodontic treatment will last shorter, but you will definitely be charged again by your dentist.
